What does it all mean?
  • Balkan Style:
    • Balkan style describes a production process whereby the cultured product is incubated in individual cups rather than in a single large vat. This type of processing adds to the unique flavour and smooth texture of the product.

  • Probiotic: The literal translation is: "for life". In a practical sense, they are "live, microbial cultures consumed or applied for a health benefit". (www.usprobiotics.org)

  • Functional Foods: "…are similar in appearance to conventional foods and are consumed as part of the usual diet. However, in addition to their nutritional function, they are designed to offer a particular health benefit over and above the traditional nutrients they contain."   • Nutraceutical: "… is any substance that is a food or a part of a food and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease…". (Dr.S.DeFelice)

  • Genetically Engineered Organism (GEO): The acronym GEO stands for, "genetically engineered organism", and was first used to designate microorganisms that had had genes from other species transferred into their genetic material by the techniques of "gene-splicing."

  • Organic: "describes a process of food production that avoids the use of synthetic inputs such as chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides, chemical growth regulators/hormones and antibiotics". (www.coabc.com)
