What
does it all mean?
- Balkan Style:
- Balkan style describes a production process whereby
the cultured product is incubated in individual cups
rather than in a single large vat. This type of processing
adds to the unique flavour and smooth texture of the
product.
- Probiotic: The literal translation is: "for life".
In a practical sense, they are "live, microbial cultures
consumed or applied for a health benefit". (www.usprobiotics.org)
- Functional Foods: "
are similar in appearance
to conventional foods and are consumed as part of the usual
diet. However, in addition to their nutritional function,
they are designed to offer a particular health benefit over
and above the traditional nutrients they contain."
(Parlimentary Assembly, Council of Europe)
- Nutraceutical: "
is any substance that is a
food or a part of a food and provides medical or health
benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease
".
(Dr.S.DeFelice)
- Genetically Engineered Organism (GEO):
The acronym GEO stands for, "genetically engineered
organism", and was first used to designate microorganisms
that had had genes from other species transferred into their
genetic material by the techniques of "gene-splicing."
- Organic: "describes a process of food production
that avoids the use of synthetic inputs such as chemical
fertilizers, chemical pesticides, chemical growth regulators/hormones
and antibiotics". (www.coabc.com)
- Isoflavones: are bioactive phytochemicals
that have the same effect as a low level or weak estrogen
in the body. They promote normal growth and development
